iMovie HD 6 was very reliable for importing mini DV and HDV tape back in the day.

Since my last post I've run some tests with Sierra and iDVD 7 with complete success. I did have some problems with getting the menu audio to play but after starting over with new project files a couple of times all went well.
If you liked the old iMovie 6 HD to use with iDVD you can still do so. There's a hacked version available here that works with Sierra....... (end of copy)

I have read that it even works with Mojave.
If you can use it to import from your miniDV camcorder you could then transfer the files into iMovie 10 to edit.
After importing, to access the media in iMovie HD6 control click on the iMovie project>Show Package contents>Media.
The reason I have copied Old Toad's link is to show that it has come from a reliable source, he would not have posted it if there were any risk.
